Queen Cells on Cutout

by Adam Ziegler on 2013-09-16, 8:32 pm

I wanted to transfer the cutout from the bee-vac to a nuc hive while performing an inspection. The bees had attached the comb to the frames and had started removing the rubber bands. brood was hatching, but no signs of eggs. I did find 3 healthy queen cells. Two were capped, and one was still being finished. Expected emergence date should be around the 23rd of this month.

The queen must have died, or must have been injured in the cutout process. I know my hives have been drone free for more than a month now... It will be interesting to see if a new queen is able to mate.

The rain has given the bees quite a bit of nectar sources to choose from. Hives that were dry a week ago now have capped honey on portions of the comb.
